I was helping my mother wash clothes, sometimes seeing the smile on someones face is worth just a lil bit of help

Whenever my mom is making clothes she tells us its not just that we need to school we need to learn the jobs of life. My momther teaches me how to live, the skills she has she passes on to her child. She teaches constantly how to live tomorrow and how to live right.

Eveyrthing she does, my mother shows that she loves me. First when I got home she left me corn meal, and then afterwards told me there was some rice on the table for me. Even if I cant get any bigger my mom continues to feed me

As I've become older I have increased responsibilities. When my mom has to run other errands she leaves it to me to watch over the food.

A very important part of my life is my faith in God. Since the earthquake I have redoubled my effort. I am grateful for my life and hope to carry out the plan that he has laid out for me.I also have the responsibility of helping to keep our house clean. Keeping areas clean is important to show respect for your environment. I help keep many things that are important to me clean and presentable including my house, our soccer field, and the GOALS headquarters in Destra.

Motorcycles have always interested me. I hope to learn to ride one day. For me they stand for freedom. For those who own a motorcycle you are freely able to move around and even able to provide for your family, In a way I see my education as my motorcylce; it is the vehicle that will carry me to a better life.

I am in my final year of college (equivalent to high school). After taking my exams I hope to go to school as an agronomist. Watching these waters from the mountains routinely destroy the crops planted in our neighborhood has driven me to find a way to control them and thus help my community.

I have always loved nature. Living alongside such beauty gives me hope even when life seems grim.

As part of the Dream Team I was in charge of organizing GOALS participants to clean up this area. We will soon be making it into a garden to provide sustainable food to the community,

With this plant were able to make beds and chairs etc. As a farmer I can help support the community in many ways

Some plants we plant mainly for beauty. Just like our children these plants require a lot of care and safe keeping before they can help make the world a better place.

After the plants sprout in our nursery we transplant them into the garden proper.

Here I am preparing the soil so that we can transplant our new plants.

Some of the coconuts we planted are starting to sprout.

Seeing the product of your hard work is truly rewarding. Our ability to grow plants gives me hope that with the proper nurturing and care we can grow our community itself into something more prosperous.

This GOALS shirt makes me feelpart of a greater whole. It gives me strength to carry on when I feel my courage waiver.

These ships sustain our community. They allow us to feed ourselves by catching fish and thus are key to our survival as a community.

I would like to be a nurse one day. I like how we can use the natural world to heal others. I would like to be the first nurse in my family

My friend Joel plays the guitar. I love the beauty of music and in church I appreciate how it feels. Just like medicine music can help heal wounds.

On January 12 my aunt was paralyzed during the earthquake. We lost alot during the quake but we gained alot as well. I am comforted by the fact that our family has come together and taken care of those of us who were hurt

My name is Kervens Seraphin, but I go by the name of Ziggy in my community. The first picture in my project is a self-portrait. I took it to showcase the person I have become. I like the music and swagger of American artists like Chris Brown and Nelly and wanted to show my laid back personality and sense of style in this picture.

Outside of my personality I thought it important to showcase my artistic side. I took this picture after seeing the Art Piece being sold. The picture itself is typical of Haitian art and highlights some of my favorite fruits. I appreciate how an artist in capturing these simple fruits can bring joy to our lives. One day I hope to myself become strong in painting using traditional Haitian methods. I took a picture of this art piece in particular because it speaks to how my community lives. We support ourselves mainly through what we can get from Mother Nature because there are few paying jobs available. The fruit of the earth is the foundation on which we build our lives.

My cousin here is playing the piano. We share a heart in that we both love art and would like to become artists. He is currently trying to teach my how to play but I am a difficult student to teach. I love watching others who are willing to fight for their dreams. This picture reminds me that me that we our each more than individuals. My cousin here represents the role my family plays in making my life better.

Travail ce liberte... is saying we have in Haiti meaning simply "Work is Liberty". I took this picture because I respect this man for finding ways to support himself. I like the sort of work he is doing where he can use his hands to create, his own sort of art.

My community suppots itself on the backs of local fisherman. It is with the money we get from the sea that we are able to do things like go to school.

I can't imagine my life without my mother. She is constantly looking for ways to improve our family's lives. She works so hard for us now, that I hope one day to make her life easier.

This photo represents my hopes and dreams. Through school I hope to be able to better the life of not just my individual family, but rather to change those of my entire community. I hope to become a nurse because we desperately need a clinic or hospital in our area. It is very difficult to get medical care in our area and so I hope my training as a nurse can help alleviate the suffering of those around us.

Age: 18 ans

Grade: 2nd year Secondary School

My name is Barthelemy Rommald Norberday Enock but I go by the nickname Norken. Since the earthquake I have defined myself a lot by my surroundings. I have lived in this house for almost a year and a half now. While I appreciate the efforts to get us housing I hope one day to be able to provide more for my family.

I have had to take over many aspects of my care that normally would not fall to me. My mother has to work outside the house so I do everything from cook and iron, to wash clothes and clean for our family.

For me school is the most important thing in life so I had to highlight my school. Without school you can never be something serious in Haiti or society in general. I took this photo on the day when I was going to take the state tests. It’s an honor for me because this test will open doors for me that I wasn’t sure would ever be open for me. Even though I am not sure I will be able to finish school, because of financial difficulties I have an opportunity many do not receive and for that I am grateful. I truly believe that to achieve GOALS mission of change in my community education is necessary and I am sure that GOALS will find a way to support us in that effort.

After the earthquake I had lost my way. I still do not have the personal drive that I once had. It’s hard because sometimes I think what will it all matter if in the next instant my life is wiped from existence. Still GOALS and the community it has given me is a blessing. Being part of something greater than myself has restored some of my love for life.

I am truly grateful not for the equipment that GOALS provides. While I would love for some replacements when the gear grows old I feel a sense of pride whenever I put on the uniform. I have pride in myself every time I see the team assembled. Sometimes when I close my eyes I can even see us as having been selected for the national team (or maybe even the Italian national team since we share the colors.)

Apart from soccer and my family I LOVE art. Drawing takes me to a different place. I like to practice whenever I find some fee time and tools. While I don’t have a barbershop I like to use my skills with art to help the community. I provide haircuts to my neighbors for free. Maybe one day I will own a barbershop and make money but for now I’m content with making sure my neighbors look good when they go out into the world and that my teammates look fresh before a game.

To know me we need to start with my community. Destra lies at the outskirts of the city next to the water. Since we are so far from town we support ourselves by growing our food and fishing.

Watching someone work the land is a joy to behold. I'm come from a farming family and working the land runs in my blood. Seeing how hard work and sweat can turn barren land to food for your family inspires me.

Apart from farming and fishing people in the area support themselves by being merchants.Even those selling the goods are intially supported by the farmers and fisherman who start the train of commerce.

Just like the community starts with the initial workers my identity starts with my Aunt(Matante) She gives me a place to live and feeds me she, she is like the farmer who cares for their plants

She as well as GOALS have placed in me a deep love for my community. I cherish its beauty and took this picture to comemorate a personal project I undertook to clean up the area.

Even as we work so hard to improve our community I feel like a person, high up in a tree, who even at the point of reaching the fruit could always fall to failure. Even so I know that I must try to reach for better things or else change will never come.

GOALS is a really important part of my life. I love the soccer and also appreciate the clean spaces it brings to my commmunity

I love to cook. When I finish school I would love to become a cook and some day own my own restaurant

In my neighborhood we dont have running water and so this stream is an essential life source. It gives us the water to do everything from clean our clothes and bathe to drink. It can also bring destruction when it rains and the river overruns its boundaries. All things in life have positive and negative aspects. Living here has taught that while in a perfect world we could fix everything, even the small changes can really improve the lives of the community.

The GOALS shirt means alot to me. It gives me membership of something bigger and greater than myself. Not only am I a part of something bigger I also know that I am helping to change my life and the lives of those in my commmunity for the better.
